The new flying firehose robot revolutionises firefighting, offering enhanced safety and efficiency in battling challenging, hard-to-reach fires.

The advent of the remotely controlled flying firehose robot emerged from a critical need to enhance firefighting strategies in the face of modern challenges. This technology revolutionises traditional firefighting methods by enabling access to hard-to-reach areas, improving efficiency in fire suppression, and allowing rapid response.

Scientists at Osaka University, Japan, have significantly advanced firefighting technology with the introduction of the Dragon Firefighter. This innovative flying firehose offers a novel approach to tackling hazardous fires, enhancing safety for human firefighters.

The researchers describe it as a four-metre-long, remotely controlled flying firehose robot prototype. This device is designed to directly approach fire sources in buildings, allowing for effective and safe fire extinguishing.

The unique firefighting tool lifts a firehose off the ground, maintaining an altitude of about two metres. It propels itself with eight adjustable water jets in its centre and head. This design enables the firehose to be flexible in shape and direction, allowing it to target flames accurately. Control of the Dragon Firefighter is achieved via a unit housed in a wheeled cart that trails the device. This cart is linked to a fire truck, which supplies water from a 14,000-litre reservoir.

Recent enhancements to the design include improved waterproofing, a more versatile nozzle unit capable of managing a broader spectrum of net forces, and a refined mechanism for more efficient water flow control. Despite these advancements, the team estimates it will be another decade before the robot is ready for real-world firefighting applications.

A primary objective is to increase the robot’s operational range to over 10 metres. According to the team, developing specialised firefighting tactics that leverage the robot’s unique features is also crucial to its ongoing development.

The Dragon Firefighter represents a groundbreaking shift in firefighting techniques, offering a safer and more effective method for dealing with hazardous fires. This project showcases the transformative impact of robotics and AI in addressing practical challenges.
